“Educulturism” (Educulturismo – Educultur) is a concept and professional field that integrates education, culture, and tourism as pillars for sustainable development and the global promotion of destinations.
The term was coined and established by Jairo A. López, an expert with a five-decade career in the tourism and media sectors. The concept is currently promoted through platforms such as World Travel Network Online (WTNO.com), where it serves as a journalistic medium for travelers and the business community to share experiences and insights linking these three sectors.
Pillars of Educultural Tourism
Education: Fosters continuous learning through the exchange of knowledge regarding destinations and traditions.
Culture: Seeks the preservation and dissemination of each region’s roots and artistic expressions.
Tourism: Acts as the practical vehicle for connecting people with new environments in a responsible and enriching manner.
As the sector evolves toward 2026, educultural tourism is positioning itself as a strategic tool to mitigate the negative impacts of international tourism and strengthen destination identity in the face of global crises. By 2026, this trend will have established itself as a global strategic priority. Its impact on sustainability manifests across three pillars:
Environmental Sustainability
Critical Awareness: Through environmental education programs integrated into the travel experience, tourists gain the knowledge needed to reduce their carbon footprint and respect ecosystems.
Active Conservation: Promotes the protection of wildlife and landscapes through concrete measures that travelers learn and apply during their stay, such as waste management and resource conservation.
Social and Cultural Sustainability
Preservation of Identity: Educultural tourism emphasizes respect for and appreciation of local cultures, avoiding the trivialization of traditions (folklorization) and fostering ethical cultural exchange.
Community Empowerment: By prioritizing learning about local traditions and knowledge, the social fabric is strengthened, and equitable access to education within the host community is promoted.
Economic Sustainability
Fair Wealth Distribution: Encourages the purchase of local products and the hiring of community guides, ensuring that economic benefits derived from tourism remain within the destination.
Development of Emerging Destinations: Current strategies for 2025–2026 aim to diversify tourism offerings toward less crowded areas, leveraging education and digital innovation as engines for inclusive growth. To implement these practices, various countries are launching long-term roadmaps—such as Guatemala’s Sustainable Tourism Master Plan 2026–2036—which seeks to transform the sector through participatory processes and continuous education.
